Elena Ethel “Elly” Schlein, born on May 4, 1985, in Lugano, is an Italian-Swiss-American politician. She graduated in law from the University of Bologna in 2011. Schlein volunteered for Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns in 2008 and 2012. From 2014 to 2019, she was a Member of the European Parliament, focusing on migration, gender equality, and anti-corruption. In 2020, she became vice president of Emilia-Romagna after receiving a record number of personal votes. She entered the Italian Chamber of Deputies in 2022. On March 12, 2023, Schlein was elected secretary of the Democratic Party, becoming the first woman, the youngest person, and the first openly LGBTQ+ figure to lead it.
