She began her acting career at age 10 with guest roles on series like The District and The Practice. Tavares gained recognition for her portrayal of Cranberry St. Claire on Nickelodeon's Unfabulous (2004–2007) and Autumn Williams on Just Jordan (2007–2008). Her other television credits include Make It or Break It, Ringer, Bones, CSI: Miami, and Queen of the South. Tavares also voiced and performed motion capture for Nora Harris in the video game The Last of Us Part II (2020). Since 2018, she has starred as Patience Robinson on The CW's All American.
